Kea, beautiful, fascinating, and intelligent, are the world’s only alpine parrot, now an endangered species because they are smart enough to get into trouble but perhaps not cute & cuddly enough for people to appreciate them and let them alone. They were hunted in New Zealand much like animals here in the ‘States that farmers and ranchers thought threatened crops or livestock. They continue to be vulnerable because of human encroachment into their habitat and other environmental threats, such as the spread of non-native predator species.
